What is Ayurveda?

A Gentle Introduction for Beginners

Ayurtoday

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural medicine from India, often called "the science of life." For thousands of years it has focused on one simple idea: when we live in harmony with our own nature and with nature around us, health and happiness flow more easily.

Ayurveda looks at you as a whole person – body, mind, senses and spirit – not just a list of symptoms. It is closely related to Yoga. If Yoga is the path of conscious movement and breath, Ayurveda is the path of conscious living

The Three Dosas

According to Ayurveda, three basic forces (doṣas) govern the body

Vāta

linked with movement, creativity, nervous system

Pitta

linked with digestion, metabolism, focus and intensity

Kapha

linked with stability, structure, calm and endurance

We all have all three, but in different proportions. This combination forms your constitution (Prakṛti). When these doṣas are in balance, we feel well; when disturbed by stress, diet, lifestyle or environment, imbalance and disease can develop.

Agni: Your Inner Fire

Another key idea is Agni, your "digestive fire." It includes how you process food, emotions and experiences. When Agni is strong and balanced, you feel light, clear, energetic and resilient. When weak or disturbed, you may feel heavy, bloated, foggy, anxious or tired

Contemporary Relevance

Modern research increasingly points to the importance of the gut microbiome, chronic low-grade inflammation, and lifestyle factors. Ayurveda places primary importance on healthy digestion and elimination, microbiome-friendly food choices, inflammation-balancing herbs, and nervous system regulation via breathing exercises, yoga and structured rest
